June 4th, 2021-Esau’s attitude prevails today – Genesis 25 “The brothers of a promised nation”. The parents favored the one who was more useful to them. Jacob being called ‘mild’ doesn’t mean that he was soft, it meant complete and upright. However he lived up to his name as he deceitfully gained the birthright of the firstborn. Traditionally that was material and spiritual so they were bartering over the nationhood of Israel but God had already given it to Jacob so they were fighting over a foregone conclusion-again man trying to do for himself, in his own time without considering waiting on the Lord. Esau despising his birthright was in the context of his actions showed he had no regard for it. His statement about dying wasn’t for the moment, it was a statement of the eventuality of life on this earth. Hebrews 12:16 also builds our knowledge of Esau’s character because it calls him sexually immoral and godless. He is an example of the typical person today. People who chase after temporary things at the cost of the eternal. It’s like being out and having a mango seed and knowing that we could plant it and reap mangoes for years with our resources but choosing to dump it because it is inconvenient to hold onto for the ride home and we console ourselves that we can always buy mangoes in the future. People trade the gifts of God for the natural things like popularity, kicks, fleeting pleasure in its various forms and reap the rewards here for it and will definitely reap the reward in eternity for it too! What are the temporary rewards that we reap? What are the eternal rewards that we forsake? Why is this so prevalent? We are a society of immediate gratification-we rather spend money to go out and eat rather than save it to buy a home or car; kids go for coke before water because it makes them feel good; clubbing in the night at the cost of sleep before work is a badge of honour; getting pregnant before married is the norm; abortion is supported by the law of the land in many countries; parents offer children gender reassignment surgery forgetting that children change their minds more than their toothbrushes.
